Sensei Pat Goodeve

I was born in the first half of the last century. I have amazed my self for being around for so long!

I learned to box and paint from my father. When I asked him why he learned to box he told me that the rations were better, this was during the war and he was in the RCN

My mother was a Metis from the north, she tried to teach me how to be clean and tidy.

In high school I first encountered a martial art; Jiu Jitsu.

In college a new sensei and a switch to Judo the gentle way. There was a lot of crashing to the ground until I learned how to roll.

In the seventies I found Aikido the 'calculus' of the marial arts.

I moved to York region and Aikido was in Toronto, too far for a man with a growing family and shift work to handle.

In my forties my son told me that I was getting fat. There was a AMA Karate dojo close to home, this was GoJu karate. There I found 'hard and soft', and after a long and interesting time I received my first Dan “Shodan”, then my second Dan “Nidan”. The dojo closed but by now karate was a habit. A new Goju dojo, this time from Okinawa the birthplace of karate.

I finally retired and as a present to myself; a three month vacation, a month of it in Okinawa studying with Master Meitatsu Yagi, the head of IMGKA, a direct line to Master Miyagi the founder of GoJu Karate. Meibukan is a world wide organization with high standards. Please check out the IMGKA website also.

I returned to Canada and continued to teach and learn. Two years ago I was given my third Dan “Sandan”, in Meibukan GoJu Karate by my teacher Sensei K. Trebilcock a seventh Dan.

I continue to study and continue to teach. As the song says “ I have a Long way to go and a Short time to get there!”
